Traulha1 is a font family created to answer a central question2: can we create a typeface dedicated to Occitan culture?3 Occitanie is more than a territory: it’s a linguistic space, vast and rich; it includes numerous particularities and dialects. Given this diversity, the answer couldn’t be purely stylistic or folkloric. The research conducted was not about illustrating an aesthetic; it was about interrogating the language itself.

Traulha takes its structure from the Occitan; focusing on some diphthongs, such as the “au” or “eu” and recurring letter pairs like “nl” and “lh”. These were designed as a system of ligatures, conceived as an adaptable skeleton capable of supporting different typographic styles.

These ligatures gave birth to Traulha Regulara and its main singularity: a punctual inversion of contrasts on some letters (“o”, “e”, “s”) while others keep a regular contrast. This subtle change gives the character its unique vibration and typographic gray.

The Traulha family contains two serif versions and one sans, as well as two italics. Each style is tailored for a specific use: small editions, press, signage. The flexibility of this family allows one to use it in various contexts, from headlines to body text.

  1. Pronounced “trauyo” with an open “o”. In Occitan, it means leaving a trace. Dictionnaire d'usage occitan/français (limousin, marche, périgord), Yves Lavalade, Instut D'Estudis Occitans Dau Lemosin 7 Décembre 2010.
  2. Originally was Yoann Minet’s question for his final project at the Estienne School of Design in 2013.
  3. Occitan is a Roman language spoken in the south of France and in some regions of Spain (Val d’Aran) and Italy (Val d’Aoste).
