Brut Grotesque was designed to be your everyday partner. Inconspicuous, sturdy and efficient, it’ll follow you in every situation.

Its design is reminiscent of Helvetica and other similar classical typefaces 1 They share a quest towards a proud impersonality, which grants Brut Grotesque the versatility of a Swiss-army knife—no pun intended. Its discreet design doesn’t step over the message and knows when to step down so that projects and ideas can shine.

Practical and level-headed, its family extends over 10 weights; from Line, its thinnest version, to Black powerful and dense. The character set contains many glyphs and special symbols; which has given the foundation for every type collection developed by Bureau Brut since. 2

Beatrice Warde might have qualified it as a crystal glass: invisible, it enhances its contents3. For us, it is more likely to be a Duralex tumbler: transparent and sturdy, almost unbreakable. A faithful companion who’s ready to resist time and use.

  1. This typeface family also finds its inspiration in unforgettable grotesque and neo-grotesque references, such as Folio (Bauer, 1956), Akzidenz-Grotesk (Berthold, 1898) or Neue Haas Grotesk (Haas, 1957–1961).
  2. This typeface was originally conceived to be Bureau Brut’s signature and day-to-day typeface, as it brilliantly completes its mission: being practical and discreet.
