Droulers Clarendon<\/em><\/b> is a fanciful version of <\/b>Clarendons<\/a><\/em> <\/b>with the distinctive features of <\/b>Droulers <\/a><\/em><\/b>: it has been designed as if it were its historical source.<\/b><\/h3>\n

Droulers<\/em> is inspired by the most iconic typographies of 19th-century typewriters. Droulers Clarendon<\/em>, on the other hand, draws inspiration from the sources of these typewriters, particularly the Clarendons. The Clarendon category\u2014subcategories of slab serifs, these fonts with thick, block-like serifs \u2014 are, for us, the most subtle and perhaps the most accomplished form of this style. We believe that the two main characteristics are high contrast for a slab serif, and the addition of brackets in the serifs, which brings softness and makes the type color warmer for body text.<\/b><\/h3>\n

The most noticeable difference between the two families is their width. Droulers<\/em> is a monospaced font. It comes from from the early typewriters where having a fixed-width for all glyphs was crucial to enable the carriage to move the same distance with each keystroke. Droulers Clarendon<\/em> are a proportional typeface family.<\/h6>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Generally, type designers design monospaced versions from proportional typeface; By doing the opposite, we were able to extract unique shapes and insert them into a proportional typeface. This method modified the proportions of Droulers. Horizontally: the wide and short letters were no longer constrained by a fixed-width. Vertically: we increased the ratio between the x-height and other vertical metrics. These changes enable improved readability in body text.<\/h6>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The serifs are designed like the Clarendons style: with brackets between the stem and serif. We’ve also added more weight at the connection between a slanted thin stroke and its serif, as seen, for example, in the letter A. This addition is also present, in a slightly different manner but with the same objective, on the end of the letter S. To ensure this character functions well in body text, these subtle modifications bring the typeface back to a more classical field, and making it more familiar to the reader.<\/h6>\n

Regarding the italics, we designed the thin and thick strokes as a round hand calligraphy. These models are created with a metal pointed nib, where the thick strokes are achieved by pressure of the tool: the more you press, the more the point spreads apart and the thicker the line. We have also retained the handwriting constructions for certain glyphs.<\/h6>\n

Droulers Clarendon<\/em> family have a wide range of weights. The bolder versions have tight letter-spacing, enabling impactful compositions at larger sizes, while versions lighter are wider with a larger letter-spacing, more suitable for smaller size.<\/h6>\n
